What causes hypodontia ?

The most common cause of hypodontia is genetic factors. In most cases patients inherit defectives genes from their parents and in some cases the genes may form abnormally with no inherited pattern. Other less common factors include  trauma, infection, radiation therapy, chemotherapeutic agents and the use of thalidomide during pregnancy.
